Portrait of a Young Girl - Charcoal

Artist's Statement:

This posting is the second of three charcoals showing individual triplets, at the age of four, at moments of preternatural solemnity.

This charcoal is of the one girl. Can pessimism look hopeful or hope appear pessimistic?

From her facial expression, posture, and the look in her eyes, I had that impression.

Love children especially, for they too are sinless like the angels;

they live to soften and purify our hearts and, as it were, to guide us.

Fyodor Dostoevsky

The Brothers Karamazov

It is frightfully difficult to know much about the fairies,

and almost the only thing for certain is that there are fairies

wherever there are children.

J.M. Barrie

Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens

You are always in my thoughts. When you were little,

I knew your whereabouts at any given moment. Now that you are...

off on your own, I still always know where you are,

because I keep you in my heart.

and no matter what parents, the potentiality of

the human race is born again.
